We recommend keeping this part as a spare. Symptoms of failure of the ignitor are the draft inducer fan will run for a short while and then shut off. The ignitor will not glow. It will typically do this sequence 3 times and then the control must be reset by shutting off power for a few seconds. Turn power back on and sequence will begin again. Normal operation is the draft inducer will run for a short period of time and the ignitor will begin to glow. The gas valve will then open and the flame will ignite. The control allows 3 seconds to prove flame. If the flame sensor is dirty or cracked it will not prove flame. Symptoms of a bad flame sensor are the draft inducer fan will run for a short period of time, the ignitor will glow, the burners will light and shut off after 3 seconds. Issues with the ignitor and flame sensor are the most common reasons for furnace failure and are simple to fix. Simply put the most logical repair if the ignitor does not glow is to replace the ignitor. If the burner ignites and shuts off after 3 seconds the most logical repair is the flame sensor. Problems with circuit boards and other componets can cause the same issues as described. The simple repairs are more common.
The ignitor is very easy to change. The only tools required are a 1/4 inch nut driver and a little patience. You remove the one screw holding the ignitor in and the wiring plugs in via a molex connector. Be sure to handle the ignitor only by the base. If you touch the black element it will shorten the life of the ignitor. While you are changing the ignitor take a look at the burners and make sure they are clean. After the flame has ignited the fire should be crisp and blue. If there is any question you should have the furnace serviced by a qualified technician.
